Can You Change the Jets in a Hot Tub?

Hot tub with massage jets running in a backyard setting

In most hot tubs, no. The jets are plumbed into the shell at the factory, and the massage you get in each seat is the massage you have for the life of the tub. You can usually adjust pressure and direction on individual jets, but you cannot swap a shoulder focused seat for a lower back focused one. That is worth knowing before you buy, because the seat that feels great in the showroom on a ten minute soak is the seat you are committing to for the next fifteen years. There is one exception, and it is the reason this question gets asked so often.

The exception: modular jetted seats

Bullfrog Spas builds hot tubs around the JetPak Therapy System, which uses removable and interchangeable jetted seat modules instead of jets plumbed permanently into the shell. Each JetPak targets a different area of the back, neck, and shoulders, and they vary in massage style and intensity. You choose which ones go in your spa when you buy it, and you can move them between seats or upgrade to a different one later. The practical effect is that the tub can change as you do. If you buy it for general relaxation and then pick up a training habit that leaves your shoulders wrecked, you are not stuck. If two people in the household want completely different massages, they can each sit in their preferred seat rather than negotiating. Bullfrog offers a range of JetPak options, and the current lineup includes up to sixteen distinct massage types depending on the series and model year. You can see the range on our Bullfrog Spas page.

Why the plumbing design matters beyond the massage

There is a second effect that is less obvious. Because the jets sit in modular packs rather than being routed through the cabinet in long plumbing runs, this design uses substantially less plumbing overall. Less plumbing means fewer places for friction to build up in the system, which contributes to pump efficiency, and fewer fittings and joints in the cabinet. Energy efficiency in a hot tub comes from a combination of things, mostly insulation and cover quality, but plumbing design is a real part of it. If running costs are on your mind, our post on hot tub energy efficiency for Bakersfield homeowners goes deeper on the day to day side of it.

What to do if you are shopping a fixed jet tub

Interchangeable seats are not the only good option, and plenty of excellent hot tubs use a traditional fixed jet layout. If that is the direction you are going, the shopping process just changes shape. Instead of choosing modules, you are choosing the whole seating configuration up front, so:

  • Sit in every seat, wet if possible, not just the lounger. Most people buy for the seat they tried and then discover the one they actually use every night is a different one.
  • Bring the person who will use it most. Height and torso length change how a jet layout feels more than almost anything else.
  • Ask which seats are designed for what. A well designed tub distributes different massage types across the seats deliberately, and a salesperson who knows the product can tell you which seat does what.

We carry hot tubs across several brands and configurations, so you can compare a modular system against a traditional layout in the same visit. Browse the full hot tub collection to see what we have.

Common questions

Can you add more jets to an existing hot tub?

Not usually. Adding jets to a conventional hot tub means cutting into the shell and re-plumbing, which is not practical or advisable on a finished spa. On a spa with modular jetted seats, you can swap in a different seat module instead, which achieves a similar result without touching the shell.

Are interchangeable hot tub jets reliable?

The modules are a designed part of the system rather than an aftermarket addition, and they seat and seal in place as intended. Any spa component can eventually need service, which is one reason to buy from a dealer who services what they sell.

How do I know which massage type I want?

Try them. Massage preference is genuinely individual and does not translate well from a spec sheet. Sitting in a wet tub for a few minutes tells you more than any amount of reading.

Can you move a jetted seat module between seats?

On the JetPak system, yes. The modules can be repositioned between seats and upgraded later, which is the main appeal of the design.
